Here’s to your health and the health of your family this Holiday Season! As we move through this special time of year, it‘s easy to set aside our ultimate health goals and indulge in the delicious feasts and celebrations. I know it was always a booby-trap for me, and I usually didn’t come out of my food coma until January. LOL! Let’s be honest – it can really be too hard to resist – with the fun of family, those once a year favorite recipes, and just the spirit of the season – who wants to feel the emotional deprivation of not participating in the festivities because of your detoxification diet. But I encourage you to keep the healing that you seek in the forefront of your mind and make conscious choices that don’t pull you away from your goals. To partake without over indulging, and hopefully, providing some healthier options for yourself and family. Whatever you do (or eat), you can always come back here for encouragement and support.
Last week I shared 5 things to do before and during a Detox. If you missed them, you can check them out HERE. So now I’m sharing my top five Don’ts during and after a Detox. Keep reading below. And I’d love to hear your thoughts! 01. Don’t Detox to Lose Weight Keep the main thing the main thing. Detoxification is about healing the body cellularly. Although losing weight and exercising can go a long way to strengthen the body, build self-confidence, and improve mood and bodily vitals. It may not address the healing that is needed. I was a lean, mean, exercising machine and was still diagnosed with MS. And the truth is that exercise can often damage joints and stress the heart of someone who is acidic and in need of a detox. Detoxification gets to the root cause of dis-ease in the body. The good news, however, is that looking younger, gaining more energy, and losing weight are already a few of the benefits of the detoxification process. It’s a two-fer! 02. Don’t Tell Everyone Not everyone deserves to know what you‘re doing. I’ve learned the hard way that many people won’t understand this method of healing and will discourage you or even try to distract you from walking your path. And unfortunately, this may include friends and family – even with the best of intentions. Many times you must be the example instead of talking about it. The results will speak volumes. Then let them approach you with an open mind, loving heart, and genuine curiosity. 03. Don’t Fear Healing Crises This one is a biggie. A healing crisis during detoxification is very common and even expected. It is the body disspelling toxins in a way that mimics “die-ease” symptoms or even symptoms you’ve never had before. A healing crisis is usually uncomfortable, lasts 1-3 days, and can falsely lead you to believe that the detoxification process isn’t working. This is when you must trust the wisdom of the body and the power of nature. In the Health Freedom Detox Course I teach ways to navigate through thIs process as the crises arise. But rest assured you actually WANT the healing crises. Each one gets you closer to the heath freedom you deserve. 04. Don’t Do Enemas or Colonics There is a time for enemas. Like when someone cannot take nourishment through the mouth or when you want to provide healing to and through the bowels. But in general, they should not be depended upon for bowel moements or cleansing the colon during a detox. When rhey are used this way, you can rob the bowels of their muscle tone and decease the natural peristalsis or contractions. Colonics are even worse, in my opinion, because they are enervating and steal your energy. After one you may feel better, but in my experience, more than that and you will leave with barely enough energy to drive home. I think the myth of colonic healing stems from the fact that there’s actual physical evidence of waste coming from our intestines. So we make the connection that that must be where the problem originates. But digestive system is for food waste. The real culprit is cellular metabolic waste and an enema and a colonic won’r wash that away. Plus during a detox your bowels are also healing. Regular, healthy bowel movements will return as the detox progresses with no additional help at all. 05. Don’t Return to Old Habits This may seem obvious, but it is very important to mention. A detoxified body is stronger, cleaner, and has a better immune system, but it isn’t invinceable. Without care it can get clogged up and bogged down again. Detoxification – for however long you luxuriate in this amazing level of healing (although I suggest for a lifetime 😊) – is a reset for your body. A time to change bad eating habits and permanently incorporate foods and a lifestyle that reinforce and continue to alkalize the body, not abuse it again. The goal is to achieve Freeom from a medical system that only sees you as a customer. Not to voluntarily imprison yourelf after all your hard work to break free. Hopefully, these tips can help you avoid some pitfalls during and after your Detox!
Starting a Detox is an undertaking. Today, I’m sharing my tops tips for starting a Detox. READ BELOW for some Do’s to follow while prepping or while in Detox Mode. 1. Do Prepare The hardest part of beginning a detox, whether using raw foods, fruit only, or juicing is the transition from your normal diet. Do yourself a favor – physically and mentally – by getting over this hurdle prior to the beginning of your Detox. At least one week before, but preferable two, begin to eliminate dairy, meats, alcohol, refined sugar, and caffeinated drinks. Eat as much fresh fruit and veggies as possible. Make sure you are drinking adequate water as well. This will go a long way in making the transition to the leaner requirements of the actual Detox much easier. 2. Do Avoid Temptation Those first few days of preparing for a Detox or the Detox itself can be the most challenging. Staying away from temptation is the best strategy during this time. Delete food delivery apps from you phone. Try to avoid social gatherings centered around food. Ask friends and family not to bring food to your home until you get over the emotional desire for your old foods. 3. Do Clean out your fridge Start cleaning out your refrigerator and cabinets. Give leftovers, frozen foods, and ingredients that should not be eaten while Detoxing to friends and family. Take canned goods to your favorite charity. I recognize that clearing food out may not be an option if have to prepare meals for others while you are Detoxing. Ask them to support your efforts by being receptive and even assisting you in preparing cooked vegan or raw vegan meals as a healthy alternative for everyone. 4. Do Keep a Journal Keeping a journal serves multiple purposes during a Detox. Firstly, you want to keep track of any symptoms and reactions. This is vital information as you move deeper into your Detox. It also allows you to more effectively communicate any concerns to your Detox Coach, if you seek assistance. But emotionally and spiritually, keeping a daily journal of your dreams, epiphanies, deepest desires and thoughts as you Detox allows you to connect to your higher self like during no other time. 5. Do Rest Adequate rest is vital at all times of our lives, but even more so while Detoxing as the goal is to divert as much energy as possible to cleaning and repairing the body. Try not to schedule strenuous exercise or physically and mentally demanding tasks while detoxing. Also avoid as much stress as possible – worry, people that drain your energy, arguments, and things that make you sad. Although, harder to do, try to also avoid stress at work. If possible, plan to meet deadlines ahead of schedule or if you are able, take time off to dedicate to your Detox. Hopefully, these tips will help you ease into your Detox! Next week – I’ll share some Detox Don’ts
I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2012 and I kept it a secret. I only told my mom, my sister, and my then boyfriend who was at the doctor’s office with me. I waited a long time before I shared it with a close friend. And even then I was paranoid that they would tell someone else. I was sad about it, afraid, and ashamed. Yes, ashamed. I was the friend who ran, did yoga, ate “mostly” healthy, did triathlons, and didn’t drink alcohol or caffeine. So how did this happen to me? I had suffered with uterine fibroids for a while at that point, and had already had one surgery to remove them a few years prior. But to my dismay they were growing back. Then I find out that I have another diagnosis – MS – that could have a very debilitating progression. I felt confused, hopeless and helpless. So I came to understand that as active as I was, there was something seriously out of balance in my body. But I still didn’t want to talk about it anyone else. How could I promote health to my friends and have such serious health problems myself. However, I was able to cling to a small ray of hope when the doctor said I had a very mild case of MS and labeled it as “probable” Multiple Sclerosis. He said the tests they use to determine a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis are not conclusive. Ding, ding! So it’s possible that I can reverse it or at the very least, stop it’s progression? So naturally I then started asking him a lot of questions like what causes it and what’s the best diet for it best exercise, etc.. If it was a mild case, then I felt I had a chance. His response: No one knows and you can eat whatever you want. He then proceeded to tell me about the latest developments in drugs to treat MS (at that time they were all injections, by the way) and suggested I get on a mild dose of a daily or weekly injection. WAIT. HUH? How does that make sense? 1. You just told me that I have a mild case. 2. Your the doctor and you don’t even know how I developed the condition? 3. You have no research on the best diet to treat it naturally. And #4. Despite your self-admitted lack of understanding – you are perfectly ok with suggesting I take a pharmaceutical injection – indefinitely? I didn’t blame my neurologist. Afterall, that’s how it works. Doctors listen to your symptoms, take tests, and then find a treatment plan to manage the disease that your symptoms and test results point to. Well, I politely refused the medicine right then and there and was determined to find a safer, natural alternative. It’s been 10 years since that “diagnosis” and I can gladly say that besides higher insurance premiums, Multiple Sclerosis is not present in my life or my body. So much so that I still don’t like to talk about it. I don’t even think about it, really. And I definitely don’t want to identify as having MS, or claim it – so to speak, because that’s not true. But I also realize that I do need to share my story more often. And louder and prouder. I am so grateful for the path that experience directed me towards. I searched and studied and found information that forever changed my health and my understanding of the body. It’s not a low point in my life. It is actually a victory and other people need to know that a diagnosis does’t have to be met with dispair and dread. And how did I heal my MS symptoms? Through Detoxification. Removing toxins and trash out of my body on a cellular level. Rehydrating the fluids so that my body was Alkaliiine, not acidic. And one of the most overlooked factors was I removed a lot of stress in my life. These are the principles that healed my MS (even though I hate to say that I was labeled with that diagnosis). YOU CAN HEAL YOURSELF TOO! The Health Freedom Detox Course starts January 23 and teaches you the exact skills you need to recognize imbalances and weakness within your own body, then create and follow a plan to reverse the problem. SAVE YOUR SEAT NOW. To Your Health Freedom!
I thought I’d do a brief recap and go over 5 of the major areas that I focus on first with clients in order to bring healing into the body. These are not the only things that may need to be addressed, but for most people, when you start cleaning and removing toxins from these 5 major areas, you can start feeling a difference almost immediately. When I discovered the missing link and how these systems worked together, it was a game changer in my health journey. I don’t want you stumbling around in the dark like I did so I’ll explain each of them below: #1 – Lymphatic System – the Key to it All – There are other systems on this list that actually affect the condition of the lymphatic system. Diet being the main one, but I put the Lymphatic System as #1, because it was the missing link for me and I’m guessing most DIY healers out there. The importance of the lymphatic system is tremendously underestimated. Medical doctors don’t seem to understand or address it at all. However, the lymphatic system works overtime to move excreted wastes and acids from your cells and the interstitial spaces of fluids in the body. You can think of the lymph vessels as the sanitary piping system that safely takes waste away – like the pipes that go from our toilets to the sewer plant. I go into a little more detail here. Once a cell excretes metabolic acidic waste – it’s the lymphatic vessels that grab those wastes and move them to the kidneys for processing. #2 – Diet For Detoxification – High Fruit, Raw Vegan– Detoxification is about balancing the chemistry in the body so that it can function properly and eliminate damaging acids. The Acid/Alkaline balance is mostly affected by the chemistry of the foods we eat. When we start to eat highly electrical, conscious, life-giving alkaline foods (fruits and veggies), we bring in the base or alkaline chemistry that starts hydrating you on a cellular level. The hydration that results from alkalinity gets that stagnant lymph moving, starts bringing fluidity into the tissues, begins breaking down all the coagulations. Making you lighter and freer! Thus, lessening the acidic load in the body. This also lessens the digestive energy required to break down the denser, acidic foods so that now the body use that extra energy on the natural detoxification processes. Bringing those system like the kidneys, for example, back “online”. #3 – Kidney Filtration – Getting the Lymph Out. Poor abused kidneys. Really. They have the thankless job of filtering the waste dumped into it by the lymphatic system. Once the lymphatic highways of vessels pipe the wastes to the kidneys – the capillaries inside the kidneys filters the trash, medicines, etc., turns it into urine, and then moves them on to the bladder. If the lymph has too many acids and other wastes for the kidneys to filter, the kidneys can become inflammed and sore, but most unfortunately – they can stop filtering. This further leads to a back up of the lymphatic system. Two Facts about Kidney Filtration:a) Urine should be cloudy not clear. When the kidneys are properly filtering the lymph out of the body, the urine will NOT be crystal clear – I don’t care how much water you drink. And b) Often times what people mistake as a bad lower back is actually inflammation and stagnation of the kidneys, not their spine. It’s typically not a skeletal/spinal problem at all, but a lack of kidney filtration. #4 – Adrenal Strengthening – Balancing the Hormones and Steriods. The adrenal glands are majorly important to a well balanced body. They produce neurotransmitters and hormones/steroids and thus affect the nervous system, reproductive organs, the fat, protein, and sugar metabolism, and electrolyte levels. Perhaps most damaging is the adrenal’s overproduction or underproduction of steriods/hormones. When the adrenals no longer create or produce the correct amounts of these necessary hormones and steroids – cortisol, for example, that aids in the acidic breakdown processes of the body – it becomes another source of how the body starts backing up with acids. #5 – Intestinal Health – Taking the trash out. The intestines remove digestive waste like the kidneys and the lymphatic system remove cellular waste. Howeverm putrefaction, fermentation, and constipation is created from an acidic diet, overeating, and improper food combinations (explained here). So instead of the waste moving out regularly (ideally one complete bowel movement per meal), the undigested waste starts to back up and cause a thick grayish, black mucoid coating to form. A backed up intestinal tract (and an acidic body in general) will also attract parasites and microbes into the body. Not a pleasant thought, but parasites are a reality for many, especially in bodies with lymphatic and digestive stagnation. These unwanted house guests assist in breaking down and eating the waste trapped inside of our bodies and guess what? The more trash, the more parasites and bacteria. As gross as it sounds, they’re just doing and making themselves at home in the process. These organisms give off ammonia and other toxic substances, which make your body even more acidic.
Holidays are those times when all of the things we love come together – good food and family & friends. But when you’ve decided to change your eating to elevate your health, holidays can be a little tricky. For someone who has decided to detox however, this holiday poses a lot of challenges. First of all, there’s just so much delicious food involved. Second, you may have friends and family that are skeptical or even flat out against your choice to change your diet and detox yourself with “just fruit and veggies”. There will also be those who don’t oppose it, but just won’t understand why you aren’t drinking a beer or eating a hot dog or hamburger like everyone else. You could decline and stay at home (maybe the safer choice), bring your own food, or go and eat nothing at all. Either way you are more than likely going to be asked to explain your choices. How you handle the family celebrations may depend on where you are on your journey:. 1) Just Getting Ready to Start. If you haven’t yet started your transition diet at all or if you want to go cold-turkey on a raw food, fruit or juice detox and haven’t begun yet, then I would say wait until after the holiday to start. If it’s going to be crazy hard for you to resist all the food – then don’t. Yes, I’m suggesting you go right ahead and eat whatever you want (within moderation). This isn’t a pass to postpone your health indefinitely, but there’s no sense in feeling like you’ve deprived yourself of a gathering with friends and all the traditions of the holiday. Give yourself permission to enjoy the Holiday and then start your detox plan with solid commitment afterward without looking back. PLEASE NOTE if you are dealing with a difficult health condition then a heavy, mucus-forming meal will probably worsen your condition. In your case delaying the detox may not be the best solution. You may still need to sit this gathering out even if you haven’t started your official detox plan. 2) Beginning to Detox. If you’ve already started your raw food, fruit fast, or juice fast detox– like in the first few days, I will suggest that you kindly decline any and all invitations that will expose you to comfort foods and things that will tempt you. In the first few days of a detox are the hardest. Do yourself a favor and avoid the temptation. If you’ve already made it through the first day or two of a detox – keep the momentum going. Unless you have the will of steel – the temptation may be too much. Only you know your state of mind. But I say give your mind a chance to get solidly in sync with your intentions before testing yourself. If staying away completely isn’t an option then a good work around would be to eat your food at home, then join the gang later after most of the cooking at eating is over. Or take a fruit spread over to the location before the cooking begins, say hello to everyone and make your excuses before the aromas from the grill get started. If the festivities are at your home and there’s no escape, make sure you have plenty of fruit and veggie options on hand. It will be tough, but you CAN do it. 3) Detox Pro.If you are at least a week or two into your detoxification plan, feeling good and determined to see it through, then you are pretty much out of the danger zone. Congratulations! That means you can be amongst all the temptation and not only resist, but not feel like you are missing out on anything. Your fruit and veggies are all you want and need. That’s the detox “high” and it’s a beautiful place to be. You now have a lot of options. Here are few suggestions: Bring Fruit to the gathering– it’s the dead of summer and it’s hot as hellfire. Since fruit is so light and refreshing, it’s easy to chill your favorite fruit, slice it up and serve it on a platter. Since fruit is often on the menu at outdoor barbeques, you’ll fit right in. No one will notice that you didn’t grab any ribs. Make a gallon or two of infused fruit water. (How amazing was the first spa that introduced us to cucumber water.) Explore all kinds of fruit combos here – grapes & apples, kiwi & strawberry, coconut & pineapple, lemon& blueberries, etc. Just slice the washed fruit in the water and refrigerate overnight. To add even more flavor and color, splash in a bit of fresh fruit juice. You’ll be the barbeque rock-star! Make your favorite raw salad and bring enough for everyone. Make sure to include the veggies that truly satisfy and fill you up. For me that’s avocado, raw nuts, sweet bell peppers, and cucumbers, but the possibilities are endless. This makes going to the barbeque stress-free and you’ll likely avoid the “why aren’t you eating meat” question. And undoubtedly, there will also be other guests that will thank you for the tastier, more filling alternative to the typical carrot and celery sticks. Again, the barbeque rock-star! So whatever you do, do it guilt-free. It’s not selfish to decline or cancel a celebration when your health might suffer otherwise. It’s also not the end of the world to push your detox plan back a day or two, or to get off track a little on a Holiday. We’ve all been there and done both. Just never lose sight of your ultimate health goal. The main thing is being healthy enough to celebrate with friends and family now and making sure you can in the future! Enjoy!
